Portuguese Gaze

The Field of the Castles

Europe lies, reclining upon her elbows:
From East to West she stretches, staring,
And romantic tresses fall over
Greek eyes, reminding.

The left elbow is stepped back;
The other laid out at an angle.
The first says Italy where it leans;
This one England where, set afar,
The hand holds the resting face.

Enigmatic and fateful she stares
Out West, to the future of the past.

The staring face is Portugal.

I love this poem and chose it for the picture because I just think it fits the"fateful staring". I am proud to be a daughter of Portugal and to share the same passion for the mysteries of the sea and the enigmatic the poets of Portuguese language always praised in their works. It's the sea from Ilha Grande, a paradise-like place near Rio de Janeiro. I just feel great around sand and salty water. That's all.
